In this article, we will explain how our survey data is reported, how results are calculated, and the population benchmark used for percentiles.
Survey Data Reporting
Survey data is organized and analyzed at the team level, as PSindex™ is specifically designed to measure psychological safety within teams. The following steps outline our process:
- Team Division and Ranking:
- Surveys are divided into their respective teams.
- Each team's scores are ranked to determine their relative performance.
- Calculating Percentiles:
- Percentiles are calculated based on the ranking of team scores rather than organization-wide scores.
- For example, if an organization has an aggregate Psychological Safety score percentile of 55, this indicates that the score is better than 55% of all team scores in our database. This is the same process with all team scores and subsequent percentiles rankings.
- Data Utilization:
- This method allows us to better represent psychological safety by providing insights at the team level.
How Results Are Calculated
The results are not based on a single measure such as the average or median. Instead, we use the following methods:
- Percentile Calculation: The percentile indicates how a team's score compares to others within the global database. For instance, a team score in the 5th percentile means that 95% of teams scored higher.
- Standard Deviation Consideration: Organization-wide scores often fall within a narrow range (typically between 40-60), making inter-organizational comparisons less meaningful. Thus, we focus on team-level analysis to highlight differences more effectively.
Global Database Population
Our database includes insights from over 800,000 data points collected from surveys worldwide. This extensive and continually growing dataset allows us to provide comprehensive benchmarks and actionable insights across a diverse range of organizations.
